Historical Timeline

From the establishment of the Armored Service to today's battlefield

Timeline of the Armored Corps

The timeline below presents the key milestones in the history of the Armored Corps and the long journey it has taken:

The story of the Armored Corps is the story of the entire State of Israel.
A force that was born out of scarcity, improvisation, and existential need, and within a few years became one of the pillars of the IDF.

The corps began even before the establishment of the state, with armored vehicles built underground from trucks and metal and wooden planks, to protect the settlements and the convoys that tried to break through to Jerusalem. Later, the first tanks arrived, armored brigades were established, and a combat doctrine was formulated that placed the tank at the forefront of the ground effort.

Since then, the armored personnel carriers have participated in all of Israel's wars and in many operations: they broke through enemy lines, stopped attacks, led forces deep into enemy territory, and operated in the desert, mountains, and built-up areas. Along with the changes on the battlefield, the corps itself has also changed. From improvised armored vehicles to Israeli-made Merkaba tanks; from an auxiliary force to a maneuverable and decisive corps; and from classic tank warfare to a multi-armed campaign, relying on intelligence, connectivity, and advanced defense systems.
